Comprehensive Gem Identification Classroom June 11 – 14 (5 seats left)

The ISG Comprehensive Gem Identification Class is a four-day classroom learning opportunity for gemology students of all levels to study a full array of natural, treated, and created gemstones. It includes a first day of gem equipment instruction and hands-on lab experience, including advanced Raman and UV-VIS-NIR Spectroscopy. Then, three days of hands-on gem identification practice of over 500 natural, created, and treated gemstones of all types. Join us for this special opportunity to get gem identification training from our new state-of-the-art gemology classroom. The study will include 4 days of hands-on experience with:

Natural Colored Gemstones – Created Gemstones – Treated Gemstones – Lab Created Diamonds – Clarity Enhanced Diamonds – Color Enhanced Diamonds – Rough Diamond Crystal Study – and some Really Weird and Fun Stuff.

Each student will have a full set of gem equipment provided.

This class is intended for gemology students of all levels seeking instructor-led, hands-on learning of gemological tools and over 500 colored gemstones and diamonds. Classes are 8:30 a.m.—5:00 p.m.

To maximize each student’s learning opportunity, we limit this class to 8 students.

The class will include the following schedule:

  • Tuesday, June 11: This is a day of instruction, lectures with videos, and hands-on practice of how to get the most out of the various gemological tools.
  • Wednesday, June 12: This is a full day of instructor-led gem identification practice utilizing our ISG Student Reference Collection of over 500 pre-identified colored gemstones and diamonds.
  • Thursday, June 13: This is a full day of instructor-led gem identification practice, including lab-created diamonds, treated diamonds, and created and treated gemstones.
  • Friday, June 14: This is an open day of instructor-supported gem identification practice of all types. Students can choose which areas they wish to study most.

Real-Time, High Definition Demonstrations

Classes included real-time, high-definition demonstrations of gemology tools and techniques and the special properties of gemstones to help students expand their gem identification knowledge quickly and efficiently.

Students can work with world-class gemological tools and equipment, including our ISG Student Reference Library, part of which is shown on the left.

Chatham Created Gems Reference Library

Students will study a full array of lab-created gemstones of all types provided by Chatham Created Gems, including one of the very first gem-quality lab-created diamonds from Chatham Created Diamonds. All of this is part of our 4-day Gem Identification Class. 

Upon completing this class, the student will have an intermediate to advanced understanding of gemstone identification, including how to utilize the concept of deductive over inductive identification processes.

Instructor: Your instructor is Robert James FGA, GG, president of the ISG. Mr. James is a Fellow of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain, a Graduate Gemologist of the Gemological Institute of America, and a former Certified Gemologist of the American Gem Society. He has taught the FGA course program as an Allied Teaching Centre of the Gem-A and taught gemology classes for the Dallas County Community College District and the Okaloosa-Walton Community College District. Mr. James holds a Higher Education Teaching Certificate from Harvard University.

Tuition: US$750.00. Complete 4-day class, including all tools.

Class Size: The class is limited to 8 students to ensure each student gets personal service.
Gemological Tools:
These are provided by the ISG, with each student having their own gem toolset to work with. Students will not need to bring anything to this class.
Previous Gemological Training: Not Required. However, knowledge of gemstones is needed.

Certificate of Completion: A Certificate of Completion will be awarded to each student at the end of the class.
Travel Information: The ISG can provide information on suggested hotels, but travel arrangements are the student’s responsibility.
